DakhaBrakha, performing Sunday, Aug. 31 at the Rio Theatre, reinterprets Ukrainian folk culture for the 21st century with a surreal spirit they jokingly refer to as “ethno-chaos.” The three women in the quartet — Iryna Kovalenko, Olena Tsibulska and Nina Garenetska — have performed together for years.
As students at the National University of Ukraine in Kyiv, studying folkloric music and theatre, they began collaborating with Vladyslav Troitskyi, director of the city’s Dakh Theatre, on DakhaBrakha as a project combining traditional elements with contemporary styles.
With actor Marko Halanevych as the fourth performing member DakhaBrakha (meaning “give/take” in Ukrainian) began using their ideas on productions such as Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Richard III before branching out into other material. Live the quartet keep their hats on but otherwise let loose in a performance Rolling Stone dubbed the “Best Break Out” show at Bonnaroo.
