Go ahead, name the largest country entirely within Europe. It’s Ukraine, a huge, ancient and contested ground between Russia, Asia, the West and the Arab world. The Ukrainian punk-folk band DakhaBrakha expresses such volatility with a sound that’s at once ancient and futuristic, combining lilting Balkan vocals with an intercontinental din of instrumentation. It arrives against the pounding background of surprisingly sophisticated tribal bucket drumming. They wowed New York’s GlobalFest 2014. Imagine what they can do inside N.C. State’s intimate ballroom.
