Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha set to play at the Musical Instrument Museum

In a time of terrible trouble in the Ukraine there are still reasons to smile, like the amazing music made by the four-piece band DakhaBrakha. The band rarely comes to this part of the world but Phoenix-area fans will have a chance to see DakhaBrakha this weekend as they bring their dynamic show to the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) Dec. 5.

Do not expect an evening of subdued folk music from DakhaBrakha. Their music is definitely informed by Ukrainian folklore but what the band plays is a form of hip world music that melds traditional Ukrainian sounds with those from Bulgaria, Africa, Hungary and the Arab nations, all whipped up with the use of exotic instruments like bugay, djembe, zgaleyka, garmoshka, darbuka and didgeridoo as well as some more familiar instruments like accordion, cello and bass drum.

Factor into the sound the fact that all four members of DakhaBrakha (three women and one man) sing and you won’t be surprised by the layered harmonies on songs like the hypnotic “Oy za Lisochkom” even if the band has just played something like the energetic “Moolamantra,” an avant garde piece that’s been given a clubby underground sound by Ukrainian remix kings Valta and Minikin.

Since the Musical Instrument Museum’s focus is on instruments from every nation, many of the concerts that take place there celebrate various ethnic sounds and cultures.
