Ukrainian ensemble DakhaBrakha will present a concert of world music on Wednesday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m. at the Campus Theatre at 413 Market St. in Lewisburg. The concert is presented as part of Bucknell University's Weis Center for the Performing Arts series.
From Kiev, Ukraine, the quartet reflects fundamental elements of sound and soul, creating a world of unexpected new music. The name DakhaBrakha, which means "give/take" in the old Ukrainian language, is original, outstanding and authentic at the same time.
Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian traditional instrumentation, the quartet's astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture. Drones and beats, crimson beads and towering black lambswool hats all serve as a striking backdrop for an unexpected, refreshingly novel vision of Eastern European roots music.
RollingStone.com called the group one of the "45 Best Things We Saw At Bonnaroo 2014" further saying, "Ukrainian folkdrone Björkpunk quartet DakhaBrakha went into Bonnaroo as unknowns but ended up with one of the most receptive crowds of the weekend. They got cheers for mournful accordion and apocalyptic cello sawing. Animal noises and bird whistles and howls got the audience to return favor, turning the tent into a happy menagerie."
DakhaBrakha has played more than 300 concerts and performances and has taken part in numerous international festivals in Ukraine, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Austria, Slovenia, Netherlands, Belgium, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Germany, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Russia, Belarus, Georgia, Hungary, Poland, China, Australia, USA, Canada and Columbia.
General Admissions tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors 62+, $5 for youth 18 and under, $5 for Bucknell employees and retirees (limit 2), $5 for non-Bucknell students and free for Bucknell students (limit 2).
