Slavic sounds: DakhaBrakha

DakhaBrakha, Ukrainian for "give/take," is an acoustic folk-punk quartet from Kiev that is influenced by traditional music & instrumentation from India, Africa, Australia, & Russia, creating a style the musicians have dubbed "ethno-chaos." It sounds like a much larger band than it is, offering songs in which the layers & conflicting melodies are more important than a listener's literal understanding of the Ukrainian lyrics, many of which are based on village folk tales. Some songs veer toward the avant-garde, & the listening experience can be almost uncomfortable, even as the cacophony reaches a satisfying crescendo. The group's appearance is a dramatic as its performance: The women wear traditional dresses that look like wedding gowns & tall hats made of dense wool. DakhaBrakha is eager for the world to understand the ancient culture of Ukraine as it struggles to become a fully independent country - & the group melds the traditional with progressive artistic expression. DakhaBrakha plays at Skylight on Sunday, Sept. 13, at 7:3- p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance, available from www.holdmyticket.com; it's $25 at the door.
